During the creation of calebash lamps, the amount of manual labour is astonishing. Enough reason to be curious about the details of this extraordinary process.
The calebash is a fruit comparable to the watermelon, being green when it hangs from a tree. The inside consists of white pulp with seeds. After the harvest a circle is carved from the bottom to remove the pulp. The calebash is cleaned, both inside and out, after which it is ready to dry in the sun. The calebash hardens and gets its more recognizeable beige color.
The dried-out, hardened calebash is now ready to be transformed into a beautiful lamp. The design is created and with a special drill the holes are carefully created into the most stunning patterns. We design the patterns ourselves! After the pattern is made visible with the drill, the calebash is decorated with colourful beads giving them a beautiful finishing touch. The outside is treated with a special oil to give them a shiny, neat look.
